WINDHOEK, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Namibia launched a mobile Cab App service in Windhoek on Tuesday, in response to the national concern of the alarming rate of intoxication-related road accidents and fatalities on the country's roads.

The application, called LEFA (Oshiwambo word for lift), is supported and powered by the Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) and is designed to help keep drunk drivers off the roads by allowing them to call the services of a registered driver to ferry them to their desired destination at a stipulated fee.

"Road fatalities in Namibia are a national concern and touches each and every one of us. Sadly, drunk driving is one of the major causes of road accidents in the country," said founder of LEFA, Melkisedek Ausiku.

Ausiku said that LEFA could play a significant role in curbing drunk driving if it is well embraced by the public.

NBL Managing Director, Wessie van der Westhuizen at the launch said the app hopefully achieves the aim of addressing the country's catastrophe of intoxication related road crashes.

"It is my hope therefore that LEFA would become every bit as much a part of your daily routine as a morning cup of coffee or a glance at your Facebook/Twitter or Instagram feeds," he added.

The App is officially available for download and ready for service, but at the moment only covers the capital city, Windhoek with plans in the pipeline to spread its footprint to other towns in the country.

Meanwhile, Ausiku aims to increase the number of registered drivers and vehicles from 11 to 50 over the next month.
